PSYCHOLOGY, Do-Nothing Challenge
Written by Rachel Jeong
These days all we seem to feel is noise.
My favorite advertisement lately is from MPR, asking if we are consuming content, or if it is consuming us. Distractions, doomscrolling, unhealthy coping mechanisms, talking with company we dislike, listening to music, watching TV, working, reading, slamming our brains with information and constant stimulation. Maybe it’s because we are too scared to experience what comes with silence. Perhaps it is boredom. Loneliness, difficult or overwhelming feelings. Maybe it’s neurologically habitual for you at this point. Perhaps it is the very idea of being stuck alone with your thoughts for a period of time with no one else to save you from them.
Yet, although short-term silence can be painful, the long-term heavily outweighs the immediate costs. According to Calm, silence can reduce stress, induce emotional regulation, increase self-awareness, clear the mind, and increase creativity. Silence allows your mind to reset, to just be, to become more alert and receptive to innovative ideas.
We recognize that we are busy with our day-to-day lives, and oftentimes feel that our existence must be earned. That’s why we created the “Do Nothing” Challenge. This summer, join us June 28th-August 3rd in our annual week-long “Do Nothing” Challenge, with new and improved virtual activities, to simply exist. It’s time to embrace silence.
Move past your short-term cognitive biases, and save your spot for the “Do Nothing” Challenge TODAY here.
